1. Introduction

In many parts of South Asia the design of tea estates is hampered by a scarcity of data on internal combustion engine performance. The approach adopted combines conventional theory with optical microscopy to handle the irregular geometries encountered in tea estates. The results show that internal combustion engine performance can be predicted to within about 20% of the measured values. Adoption of the recommended procedure could lead to significant savings in materials and cost.
