Abstract

Recent failures in multistorey buildings have been attributed in part to an incomplete knowledge of vibration of rotating shafts. A mathematical model is developed and solved by means of conformal mapping. The analysis reveals 7 distinct regimes of behaviour, each associated with a characteristic form of vibration of rotating shafts. The conclusions are likely to remain valid over the range of conditions commonly met in practice.
