Abstract
The increasing scale of agricultural machinery has exposed the limitations of the classical treatment of steel portal frames. The proposed procedure rests on transfer function analysis and requires only quantities readily available to the designer. The design charts reproduce the exact solution to within 16% over the range of practical interest. The findings warrant a re-examination of some of the assumptions underlying existing codes.
