Abstract
Population pressure and limited resources make the efficient design of fertiliser factories a matter of national importance. A laboratory programme is described in which state-space modelling is used to examine conditions typical of fertiliser factories. The analysis confirms that fermentation kinetics may be safely neglected below a load of 9 units. The outcome confirms the value of combining theoretical analysis with careful experiment.
