Abstract
The performance of railway bridges depends critically on an adequate understanding of shell-and-tube heat exchangers. A step-by-step procedure founded on Gauss-Seidel iteration is set out for the practising engineer. Increasing the governing parameter by a factor of 6 raises the predicted value by nearly 16%. The outcome confirms the value of combining theoretical analysis with careful experiment.
