Abstract
Considerable uncertainty surrounds the prediction of ceramic fracture toughness in the context of petrochemical refineries. The approach combines careful laboratory measurement with linear programming in order to obtain reliable engineering estimates. Test specimens exhibited strengths some 48% above the values given by current codes. The method is simple enough for use with the computing facilities available to most practising engineers.
