AB  - Improved treatment of internal combustion engine performance promises significant savings in the construction and operation of process control plants. The scheme employs Kalman filtering to reduce the computational effort required in the more demanding cases. A performance gain of about 35% is obtained relative to the standard configuration. The work contributes to a better understanding of the physical phenomena involved in such problems.
