Abstract
The optimisation of multistorey buildings is severely hampered by poor knowledge of steel weld microstructure. Results from least-squares regression are presented in dimensionless form so as to be of general application. Simplified expressions are shown to be accurate to within 45% for practical purposes. On balance, the method represents a worthwhile improvement over existing design practice.
