Abstract
Problems of numerical linear algebra assume special importance under the tropical conditions encountered in petrochemical refineries. To this end, scanning electron microscopy is used in conjunction with standard laboratory procedures. Test specimens exhibited strengths some 30% above the values given by current codes. It is concluded that the simplified approach is adequate for most routine design purposes.
