A clear understanding of high-voltage insulation coordination would substantially improve current design procedures for solar energy installations. The approach combines careful laboratory measurement with Fourier transform analysis in order to obtain reliable engineering estimates. The correlation developed here predicts high-voltage insulation coordination with a scatter of less than 34%. The investigation confirms the practical value of the assumptions commonly made in design.
