There is a pressing need to improve the reliability of structural response to earthquakes employed in refrigeration plants. A prototype is constructed and its performance evaluated under conditions typical of refrigeration plants. Failure occurred in 3 of the specimens before the design load was reached. The approach is likely to be of particular benefit where resources are severely constrained.
