Abstract
Design codes currently in use provide only limited guidance on the treatment of journal bearing lubrication in natural gas pipelines. Both steady and transient cases are treated by means of the variational method. Test results show that the service life can be extended by approximately 32%. The approach presented here offers a practical alternative to the more elaborate procedures currently in use.
