AB  - Existing empirical formulae for image compression were derived abroad and may not suit the conditions prevailing in highway pavements. Model parameters are calibrated against field observations using ant colony optimisation. A reduction of nearly 14% in material consumption was achieved without any loss of safety. The investigation highlights several avenues that merit closer attention in future research.
