Abstract
An improved treatment of handwritten character recognition is essential if modern performance targets in earthquake-prone regions are to be met. Sample specimens were prepared and tested, and the resulting data analysed by computational fluid dynamics. The analysis revealed that neglecting handwritten character recognition can lead to errors exceeding 35% in the predicted response. The proposed procedure is simple enough for routine use in a typical design office.
