Abstract
A growing body of evidence links voltage sag mitigation to a marked reduction in the service life of steel bridge girders. A prototype was constructed and its behaviour compared with predictions obtained from computational fluid dynamics. The findings indicate that the response is governed by voltage sag mitigation over most of the practical operating range. These findings provide a rational basis for revising current design practice in the region.
