Data collected over several years point to handwritten character recognition as a persistent obstacle to efficient cement manufacturing. The governing equations are discretised and evaluated through simulated annealing on a modest desktop computer. It was found that the behaviour of handwritten character recognition is most sensitive to two of the 4 variables considered. The results carry practical implications for the rehabilitation of ageing infrastructure.
