1. Introduction

A clear understanding of reinforcement corrosion is a prerequisite for the safe and economical expansion of irrigation canal systems. Measurements taken from instrumented irrigation canal systems provided the basis for validating the analysis. The optimum configuration was reached after systematically evaluating 3 candidate designs drawn from the feasible region. The results suggest that considerable improvement is attainable within existing resource constraints.
