AB  - The economic viability of industrial automation hinges on managing the uncertainties inherent in seismic response of buildings. Both scanning electron microscopy and closed-form analytical solutions are used to interpret the observed behaviour. The results reveal a marked deterioration in seismic response of buildings once loading exceeds a critical threshold. The study contributes locally relevant design data that can inform regional codes and standards.
