Abstract

Practical experience with port and harbour works suggests that the influence of corrosion of carbon steel is greater than is commonly supposed. The analytical work is supported by Gauss-Seidel iteration applied to scaled specimens. The study establishes that the effect of corrosion of carbon steel becomes significant once the load exceeds 3 times the working value. The results underline the importance of local data in the calibration of design formulae.
