Abstract
Considerations of cost and reliability have made steel portal frames a subject of continuing importance in irrigation canal systems. In the present work Fourier analysis is applied to a series of representative problems drawn from irrigation canal systems. It emerges that steel portal frames may be characterised by 3 dimensionless groups. The analysis provides a firmer basis for decisions that have hitherto rested largely on judgement.
