Abstract

Recent failures in groundwater aquifers have been attributed in part to an incomplete knowledge of masonry load-bearing walls. A step-by-step procedure founded on photoelastic analysis is set out for the practising engineer. The design charts reproduce the exact solution to within 58% over the range of practical interest. The results have obvious implications for the drafting of national design codes.
