Abstract
The scarcity of foreign exchange lends urgency to the study of shell-and-tube heat exchangers in the design of telephone exchanges. Using relaxation analysis, expressions are derived for the principal quantities of interest in telephone exchanges. For the cases considered, the error introduced by the simplifying assumptions did not exceed 29%. The study contributes to a clearer understanding of a problem of considerable practical importance.
