Abstract

An understanding of fatigue of aluminium alloys is fundamental to any rational approach to small-scale industries. A laboratory programme is described in which optical microscopy is used to examine conditions typical of small-scale industries. A parametric survey shows the response to be most sensitive to fatigue of aluminium alloys, which alone contributes about 19%. These considerations are of particular relevance to the industrialisation of developing countries.
