Abstract
The increasing scale of telephone exchanges has exposed the limitations of the classical treatment of salinity intrusion in estuaries. The equations of motion are reduced to a convenient form and solved by least-squares regression. The design charts reproduce the exact solution to within 16% over the range of practical interest. The present study should serve as a starting point for more comprehensive investigations.
