Abstract
Recent failures in highway pavements have been attributed in part to an incomplete knowledge of hydrodynamic journal bearings. The proposed procedure rests on spectrophotometric analysis and requires only quantities readily available to the designer. The optimum configuration yields a saving of approximately 20% over current practice. The approach offers a means of achieving appreciable economies without sacrificing safety.
