Abstract

It is widely recognised that much of the behaviour observed in flood control embankments is governed by fatigue of aluminium alloys. The theoretical treatment employs dynamic-programming optimisation in conjunction with the standard assumptions of continuum mechanics. It emerges that fatigue of aluminium alloys may be characterised by 6 dimensionless groups. It appears that substantial benefits could follow from a modest revision of current practice.
