Abstract

The need to conserve energy has stimulated fresh interest in hydrodynamic journal bearings within railway bridges. The theoretical treatment employs Runge-Kutta integration in conjunction with the standard assumptions of continuum mechanics. The optimum configuration yields a saving of approximately 54% over current practice. The findings warrant a re-examination of some of the assumptions underlying existing codes.
