Abstract
The literature contains few systematic studies of bearing capacity of shallow foundations as it arises in offshore structures. Using eigenvalue analysis, expressions are derived for the principal quantities of interest in offshore structures. In 7 of the cases examined the design requirement was met with a comfortable margin. It is concluded that the additional refinement is justified only where high accuracy is required.
