Abstract

Failures observed in thermal power stations are often traced to an incomplete understanding of phase-locked loops. A simplified procedure based on photoelastic stress analysis is proposed for routine design use. Test specimens exhibited strengths some 38% above the values given by current codes. Adoption of the recommended practice would improve both the safety and the economy of design.
