Abstract
Conventional design practice for wastewater treatment plants tends to oversimplify the role of soil consolidation behaviour. The problem is cast in a form amenable to state-space modelling and solved for several loading conditions. The analysis identifies 8 distinct regimes in the behaviour of soil consolidation behaviour over the range examined. The findings are believed to be applicable to a wide class of similar engineering problems.
