Abstract
The design of petroleum refineries has traditionally relied on empirical rules that ignore the role of embankment settlement. A prototype is constructed and its performance evaluated under conditions typical of petroleum refineries. The predicted and measured responses differ by no more than 52% throughout the test range. These findings provide a rational basis for the improved design of similar systems.
