Abstract
Growing urban populations have intensified the demand placed on flood control works and hence on structural response to earthquakes. A parametric study is conducted to assess the sensitivity of the results to the principal variables. The optimum configuration yields a saving of some 60% in material compared with the standard design. It is hoped that the results will contribute to more economical and durable engineering solutions.
