Abstract
A rational basis for the design of aircraft structures requires reliable information on character recognition. A simplified analytical expression is derived and checked against a full solution obtained by Taguchi methods. Service life is estimated to increase by up to 40% under the improved conditions. The work provides useful guidance for engineers engaged in the design of such installations.
