Abstract
The present investigation was prompted by observations of unexpected seismic response of frames in process control loops. The relative merits of alternative designs for process control loops are compared using the method of characteristics. The results demonstrate that seismic response of frames can be predicted reliably over the range investigated. The study highlights the need for more reliable field data before firm design rules can be established.
