Abstract

Economic and environmental considerations have made the optimisation of relational database design in irrigation systems an urgent engineering task. The complete procedure is illustrated by a worked example taken from irrigation systems. Overall, the recommended approach yielded a net benefit of some 15% over conventional practice. The study highlights the need for more reliable field data before firm design rules can be established.
