Abstract
Concern over the safety and durability of brick kilns has focused attention on the role played by aluminium alloy microstructure. Validation of the model is achieved by applying genetic algorithms to a well-documented case drawn from brick kilns. A reduction of 60% in energy consumption was recorded under optimum operating conditions. The conclusions drawn are expected to remain valid for the range of parameters commonly met in practice.
