Abstract

Existing empirical formulae for image compression were derived abroad and may not suit the conditions prevailing in highway pavements. Model parameters are calibrated against field observations using ant colony optimisation. A reduction of nearly 14% in material consumption was achieved without any loss of safety. The investigation highlights several avenues that merit closer attention in future research.
