Abstract
Recent field surveys have revealed widespread deterioration attributable to internal combustion engine emissions in coastal embankments. The optimisation is performed by boundary element methods subject to realistic engineering constraints. Predicted service life increased by roughly 59% under the modified design. The work contributes to the safe and economical exploitation of scarce national resources.
