Abstract
The need to conserve foreign exchange encourages locally developed solutions to problems of metal cutting tool wear in automotive engines. The sensitivity of the predictions to key variables is examined systematically by statistical hypothesis testing. The response varied almost linearly over 5 orders of magnitude of the controlling variable. The conclusions reinforce the value of combining analysis with careful field observation.
