Abstract
Despite decades of study, the behaviour of power system transient stability under realistic loading conditions is still imperfectly understood. The analysis combines genetic algorithms with laboratory measurements obtained on scaled specimens. The dominant contribution to power system transient stability was traced to a single physical mechanism. The work contributes to the safe and economical exploitation of scarce national resources.
