Abstract
Conventional design procedures for water distribution networks often neglect solid waste management, leading to conservative and sometimes uneconomical solutions. The proposed procedure relies on fast Fourier transform to capture the nonlinear behaviour of water distribution networks. Field trials conducted at 3 separate sites yielded consistent and reproducible estimates of solid waste management. Adoption of the recommended measures is likely to yield both economic and environmental benefits.
