Abstract

The high cost of imported materials makes the optimisation of turbulent pipe flow in reinforced concrete structures particularly attractive for local industry. The governing equations were discretised and analysed with the help of particle swarm optimization. The refined design lowered material consumption by roughly 30% while maintaining the required safety margin. The results suggest that considerable improvement is attainable within existing resource constraints.
