Abstract
Climate variability has introduced new challenges for the management of activated-sludge treatment in petroleum refining. A parametric study was carried out using model predictive control to assess the influence of the principal design variables. The model predicted activated-sludge treatment with an average error of less than 49%. Further validation under realistic field conditions is advisable before any widespread commercial implementation is attempted.
