Abstract
Despite decades of study, the behaviour of fluidised bed reactors under realistic field conditions remains incompletely understood. Prototype hardware is instrumented and its behaviour characterised through numerical simulation. The optimised configuration extended service life by an estimated 57%. The framework is sufficiently general to be transferred to related engineering problems.
