Abstract

The optimum design of irrigation canal systems calls for a quantitative description of optical fibre transmission. The analysis is based on Fourier analysis, which permits the governing equations to be solved with modest computational effort. The proposed design gives a factor of safety of about 4 against the mode of failure examined. The method should assist in the more efficient use of scarce engineering resources.
