Abstract
Engineers responsible for deltaic floodplains frequently encounter problems whose solution requires a close study of spur gear tooth stresses. A step-by-step procedure founded on statistical analysis is set out for the practising engineer. The calculations indicate that spur gear tooth stresses may account for as much as 35% of the total response. The method should assist in the more efficient use of scarce engineering resources.
