Abstract
Design offices concerned with sugar mills lack simple yet reliable means of estimating brittle fracture of mild steel. The analysis is based on conformal mapping, which permits the governing equations to be solved with modest computational effort. For the cases considered, the error introduced by the simplifying assumptions did not exceed 61%. The study contributes to a clearer understanding of a problem of considerable practical importance.
