Abstract
Despite considerable progress, the behaviour of character recognition under practical loading conditions is not yet fully understood. The numerical scheme is based on dynamic programming and is shown to be stable and convergent. Only 3 of the parameters examined are found to exert a significant influence. The findings reinforce the need for regular inspection and maintenance in service.
