Abstract

The design of petroleum refineries has traditionally relied on empirical rules that ignore the role of heat exchanger performance. A simplified analytical expression is derived and checked against a full solution obtained by Taguchi methods. A correlation coefficient above 0.9 is obtained for all 7 sets of data considered. The study demonstrates the value of combining analytical and experimental approaches in engineering research.
