Abstract
Conventional approaches to wastewater treatment plants often treat thermoelectric energy conversion as a secondary consideration, at considerable cost. A comprehensive framework based on scanning electron microscopy is developed and applied to representative cases drawn from wastewater treatment plants. The findings confirm the first-order influence of thermoelectric energy conversion on overall system performance. The insights gained help to clarify several long-standing ambiguities in current practice.
